Among the most complex water challenges we are tirelessly working to solve is water pollution from industrial activities. This type of water pollution is within the most critical causes of the loss of quality water, as referred by the World Water Assessment Program.
The size of the challenges and the speed that their solutions are needed will only be achieved by implementing 21st-century technology. Regarding the water pollution from textile activities, it will only be stopped if biotechnological dyes become a world benchmark, since the inorganic dyes that are currently used cause adverse effects on the environment and people's health, this represents a global crisis.
The dyeing and finishing processes contribute to 17 to 20% of the world's water pollution, which includes: pre-treatment, dyeing, and washing. In 2019 alone, the textile dyeing industry discharged 280 tons of dyes into the wastewater treatment plants or directly into the environment, using 6.2 billion cubic meters of water, which is the amount that 169 million people use each year to meet their basic needs, both for consumption and hygiene (World Health Organization recommends: 100 liters per day).
What could happen if we set an ambitious goal of evolving from 20% of global water pollution in 2020 to 0% global water pollution for year 2050?
What could happen if our technologies can be scaled with the aid of large manufacturer industries such as oil, gas, chemical, petrochemical, mining & textile that are conscious of the importance of preserving our planet’s environment?
